Short Round: Les quatre cents coups (1959) ****/*****

What a sublime journey. You simply live alongside the film’s young protagonist and get swept up in his adolescence without at any point feeling like what you’re watching is crafted storytelling. The journey works simply and organically. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for a story that includes a young punk losing his frustrations in cinema. After seeing this one again I’m inspired to both read some Balzac and also get my hands on a copy of the gorgeous score.
