Is this movie a comedy, a drama, a take on a true story, or a farce? I can’t really say after watching it, and I’m not sure the people who made it know either. When it’s trying to be funny, it often succeeds. When it tries to get dramatic, it’s mostly just corny. I liked Ewan McGregor in it and felt like he really threw himself into the role. I have a hard time ever buying Jim Carrey doing anything though. I think the guys who wrote this movie found an interesting story, but didn’t really make any decisions when adapting it. They needed to decide what this movie was and focus the story towards that. Instead it suffers an identity crisis by trying to be too many things at once.
